Riyadh Shoppers Find Five Fermented Foods Boosting Gut Health Locally
Riyadh shoppers can source laban, pickled vegetables and other fermented staples from neighbourhood markets and chain stores to support digestion.
How we reported this
Riyadh residents are stocking up on fermented foods such as laban and date vinegar pickles to address common digestive complaints during the summer months.
Interest in gut health has grown as more people in the capital adjust their diets to counter the effects of high temperatures and heavy meals typical of local hospitality. The Saudi Ministry of Health reported in its 2025 annual review that digestive disorders accounted for 18 percent of outpatient visits in Riyadh region clinics, prompting nutritionists to highlight traditional fermented items that require no special equipment to prepare or store.
Markets and stores carrying options
Shoppers in the Al Batha district can find fresh laban and mixed vegetable ferments at the daily stalls inside Souq Al Thumairi, where vendors sell 500-millilitre containers for 8 to 12 Saudi riyals. Further north, the Tamimi Markets branch on King Fahd Road stocks imported kimchi alongside local yoghurt-based drinks, with prices ranging from 15 riyals for a 400-gram jar of cabbage ferment to 22 riyals for a litre of probiotic-rich ayran. Both locations also carry date-based ferments produced by small farms in the Qassim region that arrive weekly.
King Saud University researchers published findings in March 2025 showing that participants who consumed fermented dairy products three times a week recorded a 22 percent drop in reported bloating after eight weeks. The same study tracked 340 adults across Riyadh and noted improved stool consistency scores among those who added pickled turnips or aubergines to their regular meals.
Simple ways to add them to daily meals
Nutritionists recommend starting with small portions at breakfast or dinner, such as a glass of laban with dates or a side of fermented vegetables next to grilled chicken. Residents can also visit the weekly organic section at the Riyadh Season pop-up in King Abdullah Financial District on Thursdays to sample new batches and ask vendors about salt levels and fermentation times. Those with existing conditions should check with a physician at a local clinic before making large changes to their intake.
